We never really spoke after that point, but it pleased me to reflect from time to time at his progress since the upheaval. Why, in a matter of weeks, who was to say where he'd remain?
He would often converse at length with the other patrons of the ward, smiling and nodding where appropriate. Colleagues thought this to be an admirable trait; I found it mildly repugnant. Something in the angle of his head, the gleam in his eye, betrayed a manipulative quality that had gone unnoticed before. This would never cease to trouble me, but I succeeded in rationalising it soon enough.
